ArchivalResource

Edward Chambreau collection, 1847-1880.

Collection consists of letters, manuscripts of his autobiography, his diaries, military reports, and articles written by him and General O.O. Howard. None of these materials are originals; all are photocopies and typescripts. Chambreau's original narratives and writings were passed through his family until 1964, when his granddaughters donated them to Reed College. His writings portray the perils of fighting, gambling, and drinking, and vividly illustrate frontier life of the period. The letters contain photocopies of letters from Chambreau to General Howard. (The original letters are in the Bowdoin College Library). The manuscripts contain two similar copies of Chambreau's autobiography, 1847-1890. The first version is a photocopy of a holographic manuscript and the second is a typescript of a manuscript held by W.W. Chambreau of Des Moines, Iowa. The survey of Indian nations is not included in the collection.
